A text-based social network from the Instagram team. Same account, completely different feed.
What the app is
Meta launched Threads in the summer of 2023 as a text network — closer to Twitter than to Instagram. Posts run up to 500 characters and can carry a photo or a short video, but text is the core. The Threads badge on an Instagram profile links to that person's Threads account: the login is shared, no separate sign-up is required, and your handle and follows carry over.
How it differs from Instagram
On Instagram the image decides; on Threads the sentence does. The feed is not built from the people you follow but from what the algorithm finds interesting, so a brand-new account gets seen by strangers — which almost never happens on Instagram. The flip side: followers guarantee nothing, since every post is ranked again from scratch.
Logging in and starting out
You sign in with your existing Instagram account, same password. On first launch the app offers to import your follows; importing everyone is a mistake, since the feed then fills with what you have already seen. In the first days reading and replying does more than posting: the algorithm judges an account by whether people talk back.
Why bother if you already have Instagram
For anyone selling expertise, Threads offers what Instagram no longer does — cheap reach among strangers. Competition for attention is still lower than on Instagram or TikTok, and entry costs nothing. If your business depends on imagery and a product shelf, the platform gives you much less: visuals do not sell well in text.
